The RULER Institute Online is the first step for bringing RULER to pre-K to 12 schools. The six-week, online training institute is designed to equip a small team from each school to lead RULER implementation. The training covers the skills and principles of emotional intelligence and the tools developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence to support individual growth and to improve school climate. During the training, teams begin developing a plan for bringing RULER back to their school, starting with how they will train the rest of their school staff.

The team that attends training is called the “RULER Implementation Team.” For school-based RULER Implementation Teams, each team must include at least one school administrator (principal, assistant principal, or dean of students) plus at least two teachers or mental health professionals. Need guidance on choosing an implementation team? Check out our “Choosing an Implementation Team” page.

The online training institute consists of six weeks of interactive learning in which participants are expected to spend about 2 to 2.5 hours per week engaging with the training. There is one 1-hour live webinar or discussion session each week. Live sessions are scheduled during the first week of training based on training participants’ availability (we send a poll to ask about availability). If a training participant cannot attend a live session, they can watch the recording on their own time. All live sessions are recorded with links to the recordings shared with the group. Participants receive a certificate upon completion of the training content.
