RIO Frequently Asked Questions

The RULER Institute Online is the first step for bringing RULER to a school. The six-week (2 to 2.5 hours per week commitment), online training is designed to equip a small team l to lead RULER implementation in their school. We call this team the “RULER Implementation Team.” Each team must include at least one school administrator (principal, assistant principal, or dean of students) plus at least two teachers or mental health professionals.

The RULER Institute Online is designed for PreK to 12 principals, educators, and mental health professionals who attend together as a school team. We prioritize PreK to 12 school teams that are new to RULER. At this time, we do not have the capacity to expand trainings to parents, consultants, NGOs, and professionals outside of the PreK to 12 education system.  

You will receive an email prior to the start of training that will include how to access the RULER Institute Online portal. Course content will become available one week before the training start date. 

RULER Institute Online is available to US and certain international schools. It is offered in English and Spanish.

Please select one member of your school team to complete an application. As the school’s point person, they will be responsible for answering questions about your school and district, as well as the team’s contact information. The team that will be attending the RULER Institute Online will receive confirmation of their acceptance prior to the training start date.

There is a $100 fee to make attendee changes within 10 days after the training start date. Please email rulertraining@yale.edu to request attendee changes. No changes can be made after the 10th day of training.

You should plan on devoting 2 to 2.5 hours a week to training.

The trainers for RULER Institute Online are experienced staff and consultants from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.

The RULER Institute Online training should only be accessed by the 3-to-5-person team identified in your application. Access to resources that can be shared with your entire school community will be made available after the 6–week training.

Training attendees will need to have access to a computer or mobile device with stable Internet connection. Please review the full list of technical requirements and browser compatibility.

The RULER Institute Online is designed to leverage live sessions, community, and project-based learning. Each week, new topics are introduced. We recommend completing the training material at the pace defined by the trainers. The training spans six weeks, and you will have an additional six weeks to complete your work.

The majority of RULER Institute Online work is asynchronous. You can complete the training at your own pace. A one-hour live session is scheduled weekly. Unable to attend the session live? All live sessions will be recorded and uploaded to the training portal to be viewed when you are available.
